NZXT Kraken X73 vs Kraken Z73 – Similarities

Wide Motherboard Socket Compatibility

The NZXT Kraken Z73 and Z73 have wide compatibility of processors they can cool. Both Kraken AIO liquid coolers include brackets for Intel and AMD processors. You need to buy the Threadripper brackets separately. Other than that, Ryzen processors are compatible.

Build and Materials

The build and materials are what to be expected in an AIO liquid cooler. For the water block, NZXT uses a copper cold plate that is housed in a plastic casing. Moreover, its long and beefy radiator that can house three 120mm fans is made out of lightweight and high-quality aluminum. Lastly, the tubing that connects the water block and the radiator which is 400 millimeters long is made out of Ultra-low Evaporation Rubber covered with Nylon Braided Sleeve.

Long Warranty

Although there are little mechanical parts inside these coolers, the gunk can build up inside these AIO liquid coolers which call for a repair. Why does NZXT give 6 years of warranty? Since the most likely to fail first in an AIO liquid cooler is its fans, NZXT is confident enough that it can reach more than 6 years before it fails. In fact, NZXT rated the Aer 120 fans included at around 60,000 hours or 6 years!

Differences between NZXT Kraken X73 vs Kraken Z73

Display on the Water Block

Displays on computer components seem to be a trend these days. Motherboards and computer cases, have it. And now, even AIO liquid coolers have it.

NZXT Kraken X73

Unfortunately, the Kraken X73 does not have a display. Its lack of display is one of the major differences between these AIO liquid coolers. Instead of a display on the water block, NZXT replaced it with RGB lighting. This is why the NZXT Kraken X73 has a lower price point compared to its Z-series counterpart.

NZXT Kraken Z73

On the other hand, The NZXT Kraken Z73 does come with a display in its water block. This display can come to others as a gimmick, but it does more than you think. Let’s talk about its specs first. The circular display is 2.36 inches in diameter with 24-bit true color. It can output up to 320 x 320 pixels in resolution and can reach a peak brightness of 650 cd/m2 (which to be fair is super bright.) So, what does this display do? You can customize the look of your system and make it truly yours by adding a funny GIF. Or you can make it more useful by displaying system temperatures.

Thermal performance is the most important part of any AIO liquid cooler and the main reason why you want to buy an AIO in the first place.

The NZXT Kraken X73 and Z73 have a very similar configuration. In fact, it is too similar that you can assume that both liquid coolers perform identically also. However, that is not the case. At idle with an ambient temperature of 22 degrees, the Kraken X73 performs a little worse and scored 12 degrees Celsius. When the processor is subjected to a load in the same ambient temperature, the X73 records 46 degrees Celsius in temperature.

NZXT Kraken Z73

Even though Z73 and X73 share so many characteristics, their cooling performance is another story entirely. At idle, the Z73 maintained a whole degree (11 degrees Celsius) lower compared with X73 at the same ambient temperature. A significant difference between their thermal performance can be seen more when both are subjected to a load. The Z73 recorded a whopping decrease to 42 degrees Celsius.
