What Real People Say: Breville Barista Pro vs Touch

Gail P – Seattle, WA

Hey, it’s Gail here from Seattle Coffee Gear, and what do I have next to me here? I have the Breville Barista Pro. We’ve already done a review of it, so you know all the basic features and all that. But what I want to go over is a few tips and tricks, things that you should know about this machine that might not be evident. I’ve talked to Breville Direct to get some input and insight on it.

So, this machine has a thermo jet heating system which is ready to go within three seconds, and I think it’s more like a second and a half. I mean, unbelievable! But because the heating system is heated up, that doesn’t mean your portafilter and all the brew head and all that’s hot as well, and that’s very important. You’ve heard me talk about that before, where if things are cold, you know, the water’s not the right temperature or the portafilter is cold and it’s sapping the temperature out of the water that’s coming down in the steam wand, you’re gonna get sour shots. They just aren’t gonna taste right. Coffee is best brewed by the water that’s hitting it if the temperature is between 195 and 204.

So, what do I tip on that front? Either take your portafilter, and this is just a big piece of metal, it’s a heat sink, there it is, and take it and run it under hot water in your tap to get it good and hot. Or the other thing that you can do is blind shots, no coffee in there, just brew a couple of shots, and the hot water from your heating system will come down the steam wand and actually clean any bit of coffee that might be on the screen up there and the brew head. But anyway, do that, and this will heat it up faster than just waiting for the machine to do it. So, I’ve already got this all warmed up because it’s been sitting here. You know, we had it on for a little bit before we started.

Another tip on this, on the grinder, you’ve got lots of settings on the breville barista pro here, and this is how you adjust it. I’m not gonna adjust it, but you can see it’s on number nine right now. Get your grinder set and then pull a shot and see what it looks like. And also, when you make changes on this grinder, very baby steps. This grinder is sensitive to bigger moves. And also, I usually recommend just grinding off one portafilter’s worth and throw it away. On this one, I would grind off a couple of portafilters and try it and see what it’s like. Give it a chance. Don’t make moves rapidly with this steam wand.

The third tip, the breville barista pro has a programmable steam wand, and they are volumetric as is the breville barista touch. Yes, you’ll see time come up on here, but what you’re looking for is your two ounces to come out in about twenty-five to thirty seconds. But if you’re getting two ounces a little bit quicker or a little bit slower, a little over into the 35 or so, if it tastes good, go with it. It’s volumetric, it’s not time-based. And then the other way that you can brew with this machine is manual. You can hold it on, and it does a pre-infusion. The factory settings are four-second pre-infusion and then about a thirty-second pull or so. And again, it’s volume, it’s not so much time. So, you can do a manual which will, you hold the button, and it overrides the pre-infusion. You can make your pre-infusion longer. It won’t keep that setting, the breville barista touch just does it. And I can show you that if you like or you know whatever works best, but those are the tips. And the other thing is when you’re steaming, and we are going to steam with this, I’m gonna do it right now. Turn it to steam and let it purge out the condensation down into your drip tray or steam wand or into a cup, whatever you want. You don’t want that in here. Breville barista pro vs touch is turning to water vapor, so we’re good to go.The barista pro has a blue backlit pro lcd screen with buttons on the espresso machines. The brushed stainless coffee grinder guides coffee to the milk wand of the coffee maker which is a breville barista pro.

Touch Steam Coffee Breville Touch Barista Pro

The other tip was going to be when you get on, make sure you wipe off the espresso machine and purge any milk that might be left in that steam tip. If it siphons back up into the machine, it’s going to burn and it’s not gonna be good for the coffee beans. It’s gonna ruin the inside of the machine. So, make sure you do that. You hear that thump, thump, thumping? That’s the breville barista touch making steam wand on the fly. It does not store vapor. It doesn’t have a steam wand boiler that stores steam or hot water. So, make sure you wipe the breville barista pro off and then make sure you turn this on and make water come out of there. So, what that does is it cleans out the tip, the holes, everything. And you know, milk dried up in the tip is not good for the espresso machines, especially a breville barista touch.

So, let’s make a coffee using the steam wand. And one more tip, this means it is gonna run for about 10 seconds, 11 seconds. You can pause it, shake down the mound in the middle, and then resume. That’s a nice feature. You don’t usually get that on the lower-end grinders. There were machines. This has got a lot of features that higher-end grinders have. The barista pro espresso machine has a blue backlit lcd screen with buttons and a steam wand. When you’re dialing in your grinder to get the right consistency and all of that, it’s pretty important that one person does it because how I tamp pressure-wise might not be the same as somebody else in the room with the espresso machines. So, don’t mix it up. Just one…oops, that milk was sitting up there. So yeah, make sure it’s the same person doing it; otherwise, you’d get inconsistency in your coffee..

This is a new coffee roaster that we took on,a breville barista pro. Breville barista pro vs touch, hmmm. I had some the other day, very good. I suppose you’re expecting latte art. Well, I guess you can expect it. Look at how nice that came out, real nice espresso machine. No, I can’t even get my…yeah, that’s nothing. You don’t want a jet of coffee beans. It goes over, and you get that stream behind it. That’s what that is. That’s pathetic, do not touch coffee.

What is it? That is very, um, very good, creamy and rich. Oh, nice coffee from the breville barista pro. I recommend buying it with a grinder So, tips and tricks: volume on the pour from the espresso machines. Make sure you rinse out the breville barista touch very well. Get the portafilter hot before you brew, and baby steps with the grinder. Give it a chance to catch up with itself. So, those are my little hints and tips and tricks for you guys.
